2023 will be no different than any other year in the home building business.  There, I’ve said it.  Why do I say this?  Well, the home building business has always been full of challenges and curveballs.  None of us can accurately predict what obstacles and opportunities will present themselves this year, yet we will still have to find our way through.

Over the last 20 years, I have learned the fundamentals that lead to successful home building operations.  In my experience, when these fundamentals are executed and adhered to by an organization, it can survive immense challenges. This was especially obvious during 2020 and 2021.  Many builders were able to continue running their operations, to a greater extent, as they had been in years past.  Did COVID create a disruption? Of course, but these successful builders kept their eye on the fundamentals, staying as close to them as possible.  It worked well for many.

I have also learned that fundamentals are boring.  Many organizations I work with feel like they need the latest and greatest new software, or new products in their homes, or a new communication platform.  Some of these things are great.  They can enhance an operation that is running on fundamentals, but can significantly drag an operation not running on fundamentals.

For example, if a company wants to use software to manage the building process for the organization, it is critical to have a solid, functioning schedule.  Assuming the software will create a quality schedule is a huge miss.  Companies often discover just how poorly executed the fundamentals are when they begin to implement software.

What are the fundamentals in which your company should be operating?  If you are headed to IBS 2023, visit the Builder Partnerships booth (W1445) at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 1, for my training session 3 Fundamentals of a Successful Operation.  Feel free to connect with me at carrie@shinnconsulting.com to schedule a meeting during the show.  If you are not headed to IBS, contact Shinn Consulting at 303-972-7666 or info@shinnconsulting.com to discover how we can help you get the fundamentals right and reach higher levels of success.
