It's hard to believe 2021 is almost over! I feel like I blinked and here we are, December again. As is typical of this time of year, I find myself scrambling to get it all done. However, despite the hectic pace of the day-to-day, I like to take this time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the future.

I am grateful for the continued success of this past year, and the success of our clients. We are fortunate to work with amazing people and do what we love doing: creating beautiful spaces for people to live, work, and play.

As far as looking forward, I am excited for what 2022 may bring. To help focus on what's next, we have created our list of trends, and how we expect to incorporate them into our designs in the coming year. Hope you enjoy this last newsletter of 2021. As always, we'd love to hear from you. We appreciate the feedback.

Building and Design Trends

Since the days of Nostradamus, people have been trying to predict the future. It’s not easy. Even under the best circumstances, trend forecasting can be tricky. However, understanding the changing marketplace and the needs of home buyers is critical. To determine the trends in housing and interior design for 2022, we looked at this past year and noted what we see builders and buyers gravitating towards, as well as what worked and what didn’t. We take into consideration the current state of affairs in the country and the world as a whole. And ultimately, how we as merchandisers can translate these needs, expectations, and preferences into interior designs. Trends are often presented as “what’s in” and “what’s out” for the year. Or a list of top five things we anticipate seeing a lot of in the coming year. We took a different approach this year and are organizing our design trend predictions in the following matter:
  • overall design themes
  • specific design trends supporting themes
  • tactics on how to demonstrate trends within different spaces
Basically, going from the macro perspective to the real-world, micro view. Further, we will elaborate on each of these themes and trends throughout 2022. Each newsletter installment will share a deeper dive into the impact of specific trends on our designs.

Overarching Design Themes

Health and wellness, nature, and flexibility are undeniably important to home buyers. Understanding that, there are a few overarching design themes we believe will influence the building industry in 2022.
