South Carolina Dedicates Millions to Propane Buses South Carolina recently announced that $23.6 million from the state’s second round of funding from the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust will be invested in 235 new propane autogas buses to update the state’s aging fleet. “This announcement shows South Carolina is fully committed to providing the safest, most efficient, and environmentally-friendly school buses in the nation,” said State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman. “Not only will these new propane buses help ensure over 300,000 bus riders get to and from school safely and on time, it will save taxpayers millions of dollars while drastically reducing emissions.” PERC’s interactive map shows by state how many school districts and private contractors are operating propane buses and how many emissions can be reduced by making the switch.
